The first set of pictures that I took was of Kahn Auditorium and the building behind it. I chose this location because of the curves and flowly look that the building has, and I thought it would make an interesting composition. I chose the first photo because it gave a view of the whole building and showed all of its interesting features. I chose the second photo because it showcased some of the more intricate details of the building and created an interesting composition, with the plants in the foreground, the building in the middle, and the blue sky in the background. One of the challenges I had when taking the photos was trying to get the whole building in the photo, while not including any distracting elements like sidewalks, streetlights, and people.
The second set of photos is of the U of M hospital building. It shows the children's hospital to the left and a parking garage on the right. In the first image I tried to convey a sense of depth by using leading lines that lead your eyes from the buildings in the foreground, down the alley to the building in the background. In the second photo, I made the blues of the sky and windows more saturated to create a sense of unity between the buildings and the sky. I tried taking the pictures from lots of different angles before I settled on across the street because it minimized the effect of the building getting smaller the higher up it is.
This set of photos is of a parking garage on Ann Street. I chose the location because of the unique design of the orange shutters on the front side of the building and the pattern of the concrete and windows on the side of the building. In the first photo I wanted to create a sense of contrast by dividing the photo up into three parts: the blue sky, the orange shutters, and the concrete side of the structure. I also took that photo to show the smaller details of the building's design. The first photo was taken lower down on the hill to get a view looking up at the building, and the second one was taken from higher up on the hill and across the street to get the full building in view.
These photos were taken of a abstract sculpture on the corner on Ann St and Glen Ave. I chose the location because the sculpture's curves made for an interesting composition, and the colors of the brick building behind it complemented the sculpture nicely. In the first image I took the photo with the sculpture on the right and the building on the left to create a feeling of balance. In the second photo I positioned myself so that the sun was behind sculpture, which both prevented the sculpture being underexposed relative to the sun and created a cool effect of the sun shining out from behind the sculpture. I also slightly blurred out the background of the trees to put more emphasis on the sculpture.
The last set of images that I took is of the Natural History Museum in its new location on Washtenaw Ave. I chose the location for both the interesting design and the unique colors of the building. The first photo includes the planetarium on the right side of the image, which makes both sides of the image interesting to look at. The other photo is taken from underneath the building on a staircase to showcase the interesting design of the siding and the angles on the underside of the building. On the first image there was originally a light post in front of the planetarium that was distracting, but I was able to edit it out in photoshop.
